the wedding

  • 2700 Kent Ave Ames, IA 50014 USA (map)

A traditional Tamil Iyengar (I-yen-gar) wedding in the heart of Iowa, this is five hour marathon. People who are interested in seeing the whole thing are more than welcome to come and witness.

If you'd like to come bless us, but don't have five hours, we would recommend coming for the muhurtam, between 9:30am and 10:30am.

Attire

Formal. Typically Indian.

Tone

Except for the hour during the muhurtam, guest aren't expected to respectfully watch the events at the altar (from twenty feet away, it would look like a handful of people just sitting and waiting). Instead, this is your opportunity to socialize and catch up, drift out for a bite of breakfast, etc. Children needn't be quiet. This is also your opportunity to find out more about the chaotic hour of the muhurtam.

Muhurtam

During the 'auspicious' period (called the 'muhurtam'), the most important rituals of a wedding occur, including the giving away of the bride, the tying of the knot that symbolizes marriage, and the vows (in sanskrit). Further details of the rituals to follow.

The muhurtam for the wedding is between 9:30am and 10:30am. If you have limited time and had to pick one event to attend, this would be the closest thing to 'just the ceremony'.
